My pet rats are storing food?

My two female ratties (mika and gemma) have made a little pantry of their own in their cage. inside their big igloo I ripped up some card board for them to use it as bedding because that's what they had done with their box before I had gotten them their igloo. Anyway, they would in fact use the card board as bedding, but as for a couple days ago, they moved it all into one pile and made it into a dome shape inside their igloo, but I didn't think anything of it. up until today, I began to take a closer look and there underneath the crafted dome of card board, was about twelve of their rat blocks, but my rats still look healthy. I've done lots of research before I got my ratties but maybe I missed something about food storage? I'm just curious what my little girls are up to. thanks for any answers guys.

Don't get annoyed from the fact that they steal food and place it into their home. It's their way of eating and storing food! It's like we store food in our cupboards, they store theirs in their igloo. a rat does not simply in the wild just take food and eat it outside where predators can watch. they grab their food and run the heck away from wherever they got the food from. Don't be alarmed what they are doing, it's only natural for them to do that. I hope I helped.

My girls do this too. and actually, so do my boys. my one girl Juno is the worst out of all of her brothers and sisters though. I will fill up her bowl, and literally as soon as I do she is there taking one lab block at a time up to her little hide house. She's so silly:) Her sister / cage mate Gypsy has never done this (From what I've seen) but my other girls Aggy & Giselle, Caged seperately because they can't seem to all get along, do this as well. Why my girls do this I have absolutley no idea, but I like to think the reason my boy's, Oliver & Onyx take their food & make a pile of it right outside their igloo, is because they're too lazy to get up & go out to their food bowl. *rolls eyes* OH! and all of my girls also hide atleast 3 blocks in their litter boxes, literally everytime I clean out their litter, I always find 3 in Aggys & Giselles, and like 2-3 in Juno's & Gypsy's. Never more or less. I guess it's just a rat thing? I thought mine we're just weird (: HA

But seriously, they're probably just storing it for later, or they just want some food close by when they're feeling lazy and hungry(:

nothing to be alarmed about. its completely normal.

i do appreciate the fact though that you went to find out, it seems like you are making a good rat owner :) lol
