WEST VALLEY CITY — it was exciting.

Aimie Buxton was saving money big time using coupons. Boxes and boxes of name-brand food filled up her long-term food storage.

“I used to be big into coupons,” Buxton said. “But the food I was eating was not healthy. it was processed and not as good as homemade. on the back of packages the ingredients were not what I wanted to eat.”

So one day she suddenly stopped doing the coupon thing.

And she is saving more money.

This would not surprise Jonni McCoy, the author of “Miserly Moms.” When McCoy downsized from a two-income family to one income she found food was the area in the budget where she could save the most money. Her tips ended up in her book — which changed its subtitle in the latest edition from being about living on one income to “Living well on less in a Tough Economy.”

Those tips cut her food bill in half.

Couponless and loving it

“I hate coupons,” McCoy said. “I don’t use coupons. and I don’t encourage people to use coupons because coupons are for name brand items — which are more expensive than off-brands. they are for convenience foods, which you can make for half from scratch. You fare better without a coupon.”

McCoy even had a showdown on Gayle King’s television show once where she was pitted against a couponing expert. the coupon expert and McCoy were each assigned a family and asked to buy a week’s worth of groceries. the coupon method cost $75. McCoy’s method cost $50. “Coupons look flashy, but in the long run you do better shopping sales, making food from scratch, avoiding convenience food and buying off-brands.”

McCoy thinks extreme couponing sends the wrong message of getting something for nothing. “It is very frustrating to watch that,” she said.

Stylishly frugal and healthy

Living more healthily is also part of what Sara Tetreault (pronounced Taytroh) of Portland, Oregon writes about on her blog, GoGingham.com. Tetreault said she and her husband decided to live frugally when they were married 22 years ago. “We decided to live this way as a way to save money and have choices when we were older — meaning now,” she said.

I am concerned about my neighbor's cat. The owner stores the dry bagged food in a VERY small closet, with lawn and household chemicals. I was asked to take care of the cat while they are on vacation. Whenever I open the closet, for the food, it reeks of chemicals. Could this absorb into the bagged food? I am going to buy a metal storage tin to keep the food in. should I share my concerns with the neighbor before she leaves for vacation? she will think I am nuts, but gut instinct tells me this is harmful to the cat.

I would tell her because it is better to be safe then sorry.

I think it very considerate of you to worry about this, and, depending on the chemicals, it well could pose a danger to the cat.

Buy the metal, or plastic, container and put the food in it and tell the owner why you did this.

Your idea of putting the food into an airtight container is a good one. Better yet, the chemicals should also go into their own bins, either Rubbermaid-type boxes or even just Ziplock-type bags. (Yes, you can buy them big enough to enclose big containers.) Sure, you can voice your concern. Your actions are most important, though. Bless you for being a loving neighbour.

Well right off the top of my head I'm thinking I wouldn't be too thrilled to eat something out of that closet myself..would anyone? Follow your instincts, they happen to be correct.

I would think this would not only be harmful to the cat but if she keeps her food in there too….keep quiet until she comes back home :0)
Then express your concerns to her, I think i would go over better seeing that you were taking care of her cat while she was gone. she will see the metal can which you put there only to keep her cat safe.

Yeah, if they wouldn't store their own food there, probably shouldn't store the cat's.

I would tell her your concerns, and make the point that the cat is a small animal and it wouldn't take much to make her ill if her food became at all tainted.

Tell them it's just like humans storing cleaning chemicals, etc. with pantry foods such as flour, sugar, packaged foods, etc.

The chemicals can absorb into the foods as well as the toxic smells permeating the pantry or closet. All chemicals should be out of the cat's living quarters.

Just let them know and suggest removing the chemicals outside in a storage or garage unit.

If the power went out tomorrow, would you be prepared? if disaster strikes in the form of a national crisis, could you survive?

It is very important to know the answers to these questions ahead of time. it could mean life or death someday! Thankfully, you don’t need to be inconvenienced to be prepared. Many steps to being ready can be taken each day, along with normal activities.

Your main concern during an emergency of some kind would be food and water. Without these, you can only survive a few days. so it’s important to keep a good supply of both all the time!

You have several options for storing food ahead of time.

Buy just ‘one more’ at the store.

When you go to the grocery store, buy an extra of whatever you are planning to buy in boxes or cans. keep a running list of all the extra food you have on hand, and be sure to rotate frequently! if you buy one can of tomatoes, buy one more and set it aside. after a few months, use that can of tomatoes, go to the store, and repeat the process. This keeps food fresh, so you don’t have an eight-year old can of green beans on the shelf!

Buy dried foods.

Purchase dried foods, such as:

* cereal* fruit leathers* dried fruit* raisins and craisins* nuts* beef jerky* chips and crackers* chocolate chips* pop tarts* boxed juice/milk/other beverages* candy bars* granola

For starters, you can can soups, vegetables, fruits, jams, jellies, pickles, beets, corn, chicken, beef… anything, you name it. there are pretty much no limitations to what you can preserve! That is what makes this options so nice and versatile.

If you’d like to learn how to can, there are a lot of great resources out there for you. For one, check your local library for books on this topic. there are lots of great books out there about canning and preserving. also surf the net – there are hundreds of websites about canning that can help you. In any case, definitely look into canning!

Dehydrating

Dehydrating is a fun thing to do with fruits. You can either slice your fruits, such as bananas, strawberries, cherries, apples, etc, into slices and dehydrate; or you can make home made fruit leathers.

To make fruit leathers, simply puree your fruits with a bit of water and pour onto dehydrating sheets. Dehydrating these takes a day or two; but they are so delicious and very worth the effort! when you dehydrate fruit leathers, you should chill them to keep them fresh, and to keep them from going bad.

Freezing

Freezing is not as good of an option for food storage, since, in an emergency, you may not have power – which means freezers are going to go dead. so limit your frozen food storage, since it may not be helpful in all cases.

Water

If you live in a rural area, you may own your own well, which is a good start. Consider storing water into large storage tanks as a back up if you ever lose power. Remember, without electricity, you won’t be able to run your well.

If you live in the city, than you should buy large flats of water bottles – just enough for a month. Figure out how many water bottles each member of the family would go through each day, week, and so on, and buy this many bottles of water.

Being prepared for an emergency is something that you shouldn’t pass off as unimportant. when disaster strikes, be ready for it!
